The territory

The Lands of Priolo comprise the municipalities of Nordeste e Povoação, with 101 Km2 e 110,3 km2 each, a total extension 211,3 Km2 and almost half of this territory included in São Miguel Natural Island Park and therefore protected (the SPA Pico da Vara/ Ribeira do Guilherme is also included in this protected area).

Therefore, this is the only place in the world where the rare Azores bullfinch can be observed. It has become a symbol for the territory. Also, many of the conservation actions in place since 2003 for the conservation of this bird and its habitat can be visited, turning the protected area into a living laboratory of ecosystem restoration.

Its history and local culture is disclosed through its natural and cultural heritage, in al parishes and inside the protected area. The Lands of Priolo are not only the most well preserved natural areas in the island of São Miguel, but also a good representative of living azorean traditions. Visiting the Lands of Priolo allows and authentic experience of the way of living in the archipelago

European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas

The promotion of sustainable tourism has been a serious concern of all entities working in the Lands of Priolo. For this reason, in 2011, the Regional Directorate of Environment led the application to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas, developing an ambitious partipatory process for tourism planning, conservation and management of public use in the protected areas.

The territory was awarded in 2012 with and action plan to be implemented until 2016. In 2016 it was reawarded with a new action plan in course until 2021.
