Nurseries of the Life Lands of Priolo project: 6 years of production

During the Life Project Lands of Priolo, the production of around 180 000 native and endemic plant species of the Azores to be used in the recovery actions on the Serra da Tronqueira was expected.

In the beginning of the project and through the mapping of the intervention areas the need for more plants than foreseen previously was confirmed. This was especially important for the two actions that aimed to restore Mesic Laurel Forest that were invaded with Australian Cheesewood: altitudinal gradient and water lines between Malhada and Fajã do Rodrigo. For this reason and to improve the plant production, a protocol was established with the Regional Direction of Forest Resources (DRRF),through the Forest Services of Nordeste (SFN) that had great experience in the production of native arboreal plant species. The Plant Nurseries of the project, located in a Farm area of the Regional Direction of the Farming Development (DRDA) of Santo António became this way specialized in the production of herbaceous and shrubs as well as seeds for direct seeding methodologies.

In total in the project, 300 000 plants of 32 different species were produced and used,of which the plant nurseries of the project produced half and SFN the other half. Besides the plants produced for the restoration of the Lurel Forest areas, 900 kg of herbaceous and shrub seeds were used for the stabilization of the slopes through hydro seeding.

Of the total of plants produced by the nurseries of the LIFE Lands of Priolo and SFN, the majority were destined for the restoration of the altitudinal gradient of natural forest, followed by an area also very invaded with the Cheesewood Pittosporum undulatum in Mata dos Bispos where control tests were developed for this invasive species. Besides these , plants were also used in several activities in schools, particulars and also in the creation of demonstration areas of the ornamental use of the native plants of Azores.

SPEA thanks all volunteers, visitors that took native and endemic plants in their garden, increasing the divulging and promotion of native plants of Azores.
